Preconception and prenatal vitamins

Personal health and wellness have been proven to positively influence conception and healthy pregnancy. Shady Grove Fertility encourages patients to take a preconception nutritional supplement one to three months prior to trying to conceive and continuing through the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. Near the end of the first trimester, supplement needs can evolve and a more traditional prenatal vitamin may be appropriate.

“While there has not always been such a distinction between preconception and prenatal supplements, studies have shown a woman’s nutrient needs prior to conception are different than during pregnancy, emphasizing a need for stage-based nutrition,” shares SGF’s Dr. Anish Shah. “We want to empower our patients with the information they need to choose preconception and prenatal nutritional supplements that will best serve their needs throughout their path to parenthood.”

Shady Grove Fertility is proud to recommend Luminary Vitamins and Theralogix as both products are independently and third party verified and offer high-quality, evidence-based nutritional supplements to support patients along their fertility journeys.

FAQs about preconception and prenatal vitamins

Preconception vitamins are an important addition to getting your body ready for a healthy pregnancy. Our fertility specialists recommend starting a preconception nutritional supplement 1 – 3 months prior to trying to conceive. Once you are pregnant, we recommend you are on a supplemental vitamin that meets all of your pregnancy needs.

SGF’s fertility specialists are proud to recommend Luminary Vitamins and Theralogix to offer high-quality, third-party independently verified, evidence-based nutritional supplements.

Preconception nutritional supplements address the unique needs of a woman’s body while trying to conceive, while prenatal supplements target nutritional needs of the body throughout pregnancy. Studies have shown a woman’s nutrient needs prior to conception are different than during pregnancy, emphasizing a need for stage-based nutrition

No clear research has shown any supplement particularly can improve egg quality.  While women are born with all the eggs they will ever have, preconception vitamins are important in helping the body to support the overall fertility journey. Our fertility specialists recommend taking a preconception vitamin to improve egg health 1 – 3 months prior to trying to conceive.

There isn’t a single “best” vitamin for female fertility, as a combination of several vitamins and nutrients typically supports optimal reproductive health. Our fertility specialists recommend finding evidence-based, stage-specific nutritional supplements such as Luminary Vitamins or Theralogix.

For male fertility, several vitamins and nutrients are important to enhancing sperm quality, motility, and overall reproductive health.
