Staff was great with directions on taking deep breath to relieve any cramping during the procedure.
Is it normal for your first period to be heavier than normal after the HSG procedure?

The anticipation and anxiety were so bad given what I had read online. What I can say is that it was uncomfortable, but not nearly as bad as I expected. This is not to diminish anyone else who had a really painful experience, because I think everyone’s procedure and body is different. Here are a few tips that I followed after reading from various places online:
– Wore loose and comfortable clothing, especially pants loose in the waist. Wore shoes that could slip on and off.
– Made sure I ate breakfast, was hydrated, and for me I was worried about fainting so I drank some electrolytes beforehand. I also brought a water bottle and some crackers/peanut butter, but I did not need them. Standard 800 mg ibuprofen 45 minutes before appt. time.
– Brought my own pad and a heated waistband for the ride home. Wore dark sweatpants in case of fluid leaking out after.
– I did some deep breathing on the table and really tried to relax my body even though it was hard. For me, once the speculum was out and the catheter in everything felt much better because the dye part is over so fast. By the time your brain begins to really register pain, it is over.
– I was lucky enough to take off work and rested the afternoon after my noon time procedure. I did have minor cramping and was worn out (probably from anxiety), but I could have gone back to work if I had to. If you have to work, just make sure you have some more advil or painkillers. I had some spotting and cramping for two days after, but I’m not sure if that was related to the HSG or a medication I was on.
I had a wonderful doctor perform the procedure and she walked me through each step. For reference, IUD insertion and removal were actually much more painful for me. Good luck to everyone worried about this procedure, it isn’t that bad, you will be just fine and if I could do it you can!

Had my HSG this morning around 11 am. The worst pain I have ever felt in my life. The tubes were blocked but finally they opened.it is 1620 hrs now and still feel the pains severely. Took pain killers before the procedure and at 1300 hrs when I got at home. But I am hoping it is worth it. Been married for 12 years with no kids.

I was nervous for it but it was so quick. the whole procedure took maybe 2 minutes. Took 2 Advil an hour before. Only had minor cramping when the die went it and that lasted no more than 30 sec. I had just a tiny bit of spotting for 24 hours after.

I made it out to be way worse than it turned out to be. The NP and her assist. were very caring and kind.
I took 800mg of Ibuprofen about 75 min beforehand. During the HSG, I experienced about a min or two of cramping when the dye was put in. The cramps felt similar to the first day of my period, except that these cramps went away almost as immediately as they began. I took a few deep breaths and it was over! I felt some light cramping later in the day when the Ibuprofen ran its course. The light after-cramps were barely noticeable and were gone by the following morning.

I mean there is xray involved and it seems that it may impact the eggs inside the ovary. Is there no risk of abnormal growth if you got pregnant due to intercourse just a day after the hsg?

Hi Shamim,
It’s hard to say, but I would recommend making an appointment with your OBGYN to be safe. He/she will have a better understanding of what might be causing this and will be able to offer advice.
Best of luck!

Since then, I have not had my periods. could this be a side effect of the exercise?
Thanks
