Shared Risk 100% Refund Program

Shady Grove Fertility was the first fertility practice in the country to introduce a Shared Risk 100% Refund Program with a straightforward purpose: participants grow their families or receive a full refund to use for other family-building options. Patients can pursue treatment without the worry of cost versus chances of success, and without sacrificing high-quality medical care.

Today, we offer a Shared Risk 100% Refund for IVF, donor eggs, and frozen embryo transfer (FET), and returning egg freezing patients.

Shared Risk for IVF and donor egg

Patients selecting this program may attempt up to 6 IVF or donor egg cycles and any subsequent frozen embryo transfers (FETs) for a flat amount.¹ In the event the attempts are unsuccessful, or the patient chooses to withdraw at any time, 100% of the deposit is refunded.² Pregnancy success rates in this program are comparable to the results of all IVF and donor egg cycles.

Patients achieving a pregnancy on the first attempt will pay more with this program than the traditional fee-for-service payment methods. On the other hand, if you don’t take a baby home, Shady Grove Fertility assumes the bulk of the costs, hence the name, “Shared Risk.” Patients using donor eggs are eligible for this program at slightly higher costs.

Costs:

Pricing for Shared Risk is dependent on age and services. Please speak with your financial counselor for exact costs. Eligible patients may also do a monthly payment plan through Fertility Finance.

The Shared Risk Program is designed for patients without insurance or patients opting to not use insurance benefits. Shared Risk cannot be combined with other treatment discounts.

Inclusions:

  • All medical and laboratory services for up to 6 complete IVF cycles — from the start of medications through the first blood pregnancy test — are included. This includes assisted hatching of embryos and ICSI, if clinically needed.
  • If using an egg donor, the costs of monitoring, completed at SGF, and egg retrieval are also included.
  • Cryopreservation of viable embryos not transferred during any fresh Shared Risk cycle as well as the costs of FETs, until you have a baby or choose to withdraw from the program.

What counts as a cycle? A completed IVF cycle is considered one in which an embryo retrieval takes place. A cycle canceled during the stimulation and monitoring phase, or one in which a patient had no eggs to retrieve for fertilization, does not count as one of the 6 cycles to which you are entitled.

A cycle in which you conceived but lose the pregnancy any time before delivery is considered one of the possible 6 completed IVF cycles.

Exclusions:

  • Shared Risk costs do not cover consultations, diagnostic testing, outside services, medications, urologic male sperm retrieval procedure, or costs associated with complications or non-IVF care.

Eligibility:

  • Medically indicated for the proposed treatment
  • Patient carrying pregnancy must be 40 upon completion of the IVF cycles
  • Patients 41 and older can participate in Shared Risk if using donor eggs
  • Patient needs ICSI, gestational carrier, and embryo biopsy are eligible

¹Shared Risk payment is in the form of a refundable deposit.
²Exceptions apply, refer to contract for details.

Patients should speak with their financial counselor for more details on the Shared Risk 100% Refund Program.

Shared Risk for frozen embryo transfers

With the Shared Risk 100% Refund Program for Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET), patients pay a flat amount for unlimited FET cycles, for as many frozen embryos as that patient may have available at the time they enter the program. Intended parents can enroll in Shared Risk for FETs for embryo transfers to their Gestational Carrier. In terms of program completion, a patient has the following possible outcomes:

  • Successful pregnancy and delivery
  • Withdrawal from the program at any time, receiving a full refund
  • Use of all embryos available without conceiving and receiving a full refund

Eligibility:

  • Must have blastocyst-stage embryos cryopreserved using vitrification method at an SGF laboratory
  • Embryos must be cryopreserved before the patient turned 39 or created with donor eggs

Patients should speak with their financial counselor for more details on the Shared Risk 100% Refund Program.

Shared Risk for returning egg freezing patients

With the Shared Risk 100% Refund Program for Returning Egg Freezing Patients, patients pay a flat amount for unlimited egg thaw and frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycles from their previously frozen eggs. With this program, a patient has the following possible outcomes:

  • Successful pregnancy and delivery
  • Withdrawal from the program at any time, receiving a full refund
  • Use of all embryos available without conceiving and receiving a full refund

For women who do not take home a baby, the refund does not cover the initial egg freezing costs.

For women who do not qualify or opt not to participate in the egg freezing guarantee program, there is a flat cost for one egg thaw cycle, which does not include the re-freeze of additional embryos or subsequent frozen embryo transfers (FETs).

Inclusions:

  • The Shared Risk Program includes egg thaws, fertilization, cultured embryos, cryopreservation, any frozen embryo trasnfers, and storage.
  • Withdrawal from the program at any time, receiving a full refund
  • Use of all embryos available without conceiving and receiving a full refund

Eligibility:

  • Eggs must have been cryopreserved using the vitrification method at an SGF laboratory
  • Minimum of 10 frozen mature eggs
  • All thaw cycles must be completed by age of 51
  • Meet additional age and favorable ovarian reserve criteria at time of egg freezing

FAQs

Yes. PGT can be added for an additional fee.

No. The medical evaluation and pre-screening used in preparation for an IVF or donor egg cycle is the same.

No. Just as there are no differences in the pre-screening tests, there are no differences in treatment protocol between patients who elect to enroll in the Shared Risk 100% Refund Program and those who do not. Shared Risk is only a financing plan and is not used to dictate or determine any aspect of your medical care.

No. If your treatment doesn’t result in a child or you choose to withdraw, you’ll receive a full refund.*

Just as you have the right to withdraw, we must share the right to withdraw you from the Shared Risk 100% Refund Program, such as if you have an unexpectedly poor ovarian response to stimulation. In this rare event, we will issue you the same refund that you would receive if you withdrew on your own.

*Some conditions apply; see contract for details.

The program was created in 1993 for patients who do not have or chose to waive their insurance coverage but want to pursue in vitro fertilization (IVF) to grow their families.

Michael Levy, the co-founder of SGF, explains why the Shared Risk program was created as, “A few months after we started the practice, I saw a patient who had a failed IVF cycle at another practice and wanted to try a new cycle with SGF to grow her family. She was worried that if a second IVF cycle didn’t work, she would no longer have the funds to afford her backup plan, which was adoption. That stimulated significant concern at SGF — patients should not be burdened with such a tough choice.”

Yes. While a successful pregnancy is not guaranteed, you’ll receive a full refund if treatment fails to help you have a baby.* You may view this in contrast to what is guaranteed in our traditional fee-for-service program: In that program, you are guaranteed to pay the fee regardless of the IVF cycle outcome.

*For patients that undergo PGT and know the sex of the embryos and opt to discard the embryos and/or withdrawal from Shared Risk, a portion of the fees will be returned to the patient; a 100% refund will not be given.

Yes. We have patients who travel from around the country and internationally, many of whom come to us initially because we offer the Shared Risk 100% Refund Program. We have staff members designated to help you with any logistical arrangements, and we are experienced with working with your local physicians to minimize inconvenience to you without compromising your medical care.
